The Gold Coast SUNS have been dealt another major injury blow with key defender Rory Thompson set to miss the remainder of the season following surgery on his ankle.

Thompson had scans on his ankle last week and met with a specialist this week where it was determine surgery was necessary.

“Rory sustained a significant amount of ligament damage to his ankle and following consultation with the specialist it was determined that surgery was a necessity.”

Ashcroft said it was a disappointing result for both Rory and the club.

“It is extremely disappointing for Rory, we saw in the second half of last year what he is capable of, and on the back of an injury interrupted start to the season we were hopeful that Rory would finish off the season strongly.”

Thompson has played 13 matches for the GC SUNS since making his AFL debut in Round 16, 2011.
