Sport Minister Phil Reeves was joined by GC SUNS CEO, Travis Auld and Trent McKenzie at Surfers Paradise State School today where it was announced that $200,000 will be provided over three years to sponsor the club’s SHINE program involving Year 4 students.

“Schools are a great place to get young people thinking about important health issues,” Mr Reeves said.

“Last year about 2,000 students benefited from this great program, delivered by Suns players.
“As a government committed to changing Queenslanders’ lifestyle habits, we’re pleased to sponsor the SHINE program over the next three years.”

Mr Reeves said the program was undertaken at 26 Gold Coast schools.

“The club’s CEO Travis Auld, staff, players and the SHINE ambassadors should be commended for establishing the SHINE Schools Program.

“The Suns are building good community partnerships, which last year saw their players and coaching staff making over 1,500 appearances at various events.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO, Travis Auld thanks the Bligh Government for the support.

“We would like to thank the Queensland Government for its investment and long term commitment to the Gold Coast SUNS “SHINE” schools program.”

“Today's funding announcement will secure the “SHINE” schools program in Gold Coast schools for the next three years, providing a significant benefit for students, teachers and families of the Gold Coast community.”

After a successful first year, enrolments to participate in the program have been overwhelming and with the support of the Queensland Government the Gold Coast SUNS can offer the program to any student, in any school, across the coast, at no cost.

Auld said after the announcement that schools across the Gold Coast are all invited to participate in the program.

“Schools such as where we are today, in the heart of Surfers Paradise at Surfers Paradise State School or schools all over the coast have an invitation to participate in the “SHINE” schools program.”

“We are extremely proud of the “SHINE” schools program, delivered by Trent McKenzie and his teammates across all four school terms of the school year in association with our fellow community partners to encourage children to participate in sport and to be healthy and active.”
