Off the back of an exciting start to the 2020 season on the field, the Gold Coast SUNS are continuing to break new ground by reaching a club membership record of 14,465 with six weeks still remaining before the membership period closes.
The previous record of 14,131 was set back in the club’s inaugural season in 2011, but was eclipsed this week after the club held a membership drive to hit the milestone.
SUNS CEO Mark Evans said it was a tremendous result to see so many people pledge their support to the club in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re incredibly proud to break our club membership record off the back of some outstanding support from the Gold Coast community and beyond,” Mr Evans said.
“2020 has been a challenging year in many respects but to see our long-term, renewing and new members accept the challenge and commit to the club has been really great to see.
“Our supporter base continues to grow with Gold Coast locals getting behind the club because they like what they are seeing on the field from our young and talented team. They can see the future is bright and want to be a part of it.
“I want to thank our members and corporate partners for backing the SUNS – they are just so important to this club and we truly appreciate it.”
The SUNS have made huge strides since the AFL competition restart in June, with four players being nominated for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award, Senior Coach Stuart Dew signing a contract extension and the team recording four wins.
Evans said the SUNS had played a big role in keeping the AFL competition running and continued to make a positive impact in the community.
“Participation in AFL in Queensland is up, our on-field wins are up, our broadcast numbers are up, morale is up and now membership is also up,” he said.
“It’s clear the AFL’s investment in football in QLD and NSW is working and needs to continue forever.
“The Gold Coast and Queensland is playing a major role in keeping the competition going in 2020 and the SUNS are playing an exciting, hard-running brand of football that Gold Coasters can get behind.”
Memberships are still available for purchase and with the SUNS having three games fixtured at Metricon Stadium in the next few rounds there is no better time to sign up.
