For captain Steven May speculation surrounding his contract, which expires at the end of 2017, is a moot point, with his future securely on the Gold Coast.

The 25-year-old took over the captaincy alongside forward Tom Lynch in late 2016.

“I think the club has indicated that they are keen to extend the deal. Then it’s just a matter of getting down into the nitty gritty and getting it sorted,” May told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“Once I have a meeting with my manager and sit down and view my future – which becoming a captain you would think is on the Gold Coast – so once that comes together I should be staying here.

“I’ve always signed in my out-of-contract year so to myself and my manger it’s more of a formality.

The Darwin product was taken as a local talent selection in 2010 and has stamped himself as one of the best defenders in the competition.

“I would have thought it’s a matter of when because the club’s ready to re-sign me,” May said.

“I’m from Darwin so I don’t have a ‘go home’ factor or anything like that. My manager’s been in contact with the club and they are going through the finer things and I think I have a meeting with him soon.

“Once things settle down a bit we will fully address that."

Gold Coast senior coach Rodney Eade said the club were confident of May putting pen to paper shortly.

“We have spoken to Steven and his management so it’s all positive there. It’s a matter of timing,” Eade said.

“We are hopeful that it will be sooner rather than later. We will work through that hopefully over the next month or so.”
