After ending a six-match winless streak in emphatic fashion against North Melbourne on Sunday night, the SUNS have set a foundation for a big finish to the 2020 season.

Speaking on SEN, Captain David Swallow said he was pleased with the team’s efforts on Sunday night, and thought the remaining month of football was a great opportunity to build momentum, especially heading into next year.

“We have turned a massive focus on finishing strong, whether that means we make the finals or not,” he said.

“We have to take every opportunity and perform every week. This year has thrown up challenges but we’ve to get on with it.”

Swallow said it was exciting to see young players like Ben King (two goals) and Noah Anderson (23 disposals) deliver on their potential and have an impact on the result.

“We are really lucky to have them,” he said.

“They are playing some really good footy and they have stepped up to the level

“Also, having more experienced players, like Ben Ainsworth, Jack Bowes and Charlie Ballard, on board is good for the team and makes us stronger.”

Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium is a prime candidate to host finals football in a month’s time and will have hosted 42 home and away games this season. 

Swallow said it was a positive for Queensland to have so many AFL games in the state.

 “I think people are enjoying the opportunity to watch a lot (of football) live,” he said. 

“When I have been speaking to the other teams, it seems they are enjoying it.

“It’s good for footy in Queensland. It’s nice to be able to continue the season and Queensland has provided us the place and location to do that.”

The SUNS will have a nine-day break before taking on the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in the QClash on Wednesday September 9.
