The Gold Coast SUNS are continuing fruitful discussions on a number of fronts after the SUNS agreed to a deal with Josh Caddy’s management and the Geelong Football Club.
The GC SUNS, who have been riding a high since securing Jack Martin, are involved in various discussions with several clubs.
GC SUNS, General Manager Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft told goldcoastfc.com.au that there was a central theme for the club when it came to all the discussions.
We are going about our business with the best interest of the Gold Coast Football Club at heart.
"Each scenario that gets thrown up we assess, and determine how it helps us achieve our goals, if there is a benefit to us, we will proceed with discussions, if not, we move on," Ashcroft said.
Much if the speculation surrounding the GC SUNS activity has centred around Josh Caddy and his move to a Victorian club and Ashcroft admitted that the Caddy had kept the SUNS busy.
It was consuming most of our time.
"We had a number of interested clubs vying for Josh's services, which was a good result for us."
We were always confident that we would reach an appropriate deal, and although it will be formally finalised in the coming days, we thought it was important to confirm the deal to allow us to proceed with other discussions.
Now the Caddy deal has been agreed upon, Ashcroft said the club was in a better place to determine the outcome of other discussions
"We have a lot of interest in our Queensland zone players, as well as some interest in a number of our out of contract players, that gives us plenty to think about."
Ashcroft admitted that with the SUNS senior list to be cut from 46 to 42, spots on the list on 2013 would be at a premium.
Our talent is getting deeper, there's no doubt about that, and finding a spot on our list is getting harder,
"The list establishment rules mean that we need to reduce our list, and that means talented players might not fit on our list."
Ashcroft also pointed out that the SUNS list would continue to get stronger as it reduces in size.
"This year we add the talented Jaeger O'Meara to the senior list, and we elevate Kyal Horsley, who was outstanding last season and deserves his spot."
"Depending on what happens with our Queensland zone talent, we might add one or two of those players, plus we will add more elite talent at the draft, unfortunately 45 or 46 players doesn't fit into our list of 42, but what we can do is use those players to improve our draft position," Ashcroft said.
