Steven May will need to train strongly this week to be given the green light to fire against Melbourne at the MCG this Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old was a significant absentee in the side’s 45-point loss to Fremantle on the weekend, with the senior team desperately missing May’s strong marking ability and ground-level pressure around the contested football after the talented utility sustained a minor hamstring strain in the lead-up to the Round 6 Clash against the Dockers.

But GC SUNS General Manager of Football Operations Marcus Ashcroft, told goldcoastfc.com.au that the club was expecting May to be passed fit at training this week after the former NT Thunder star had been in high spirits at Monday’s Aerobic Flush session.

“Steven experienced some uncomfort in his hamstring last week however is recovering really well and will give himself every chance to be available for senior selection against Melbourne this week,” said Ashcroft.

Meanwhile, Charlie Dixon will also need to pass a fitness test at training this week after being substituted with an ankle injury on Saturday night, but is expected to take his place in the centre circle after senior coach Guy McKenna said scans had revealed the injury was minor.

“Charlie tweaked his ankle and got it re-strapped but it looked as though he was running around with a stone in his boot so it made for an easy call,” said McKenna.

“But we’re pretty confident he’ll get up for this week.”
