The wait is almost over.

This Saturday, the AFL season kicks off at Metricon Stadium with the GC SUNS set to battle for NAB Cup starting positions during an intra-club match.

Following an intense pre-season training regime, it’s expected the trial will be an extremely physical affair with General Manager of Football Operations Marcus Ashcroft saying the players are looking forward to testing themselves.

“The team has been training hard over the pre-season, and it’ll make a big difference to them to play in front of a crowd, in a real match-day simulated environment.

“It’s a great opportunity for our members and fans to get behind the boys and celebrate our official start of footy season,” he said.

Senior Coach Guy McKenna said that with NAB Cup only one week away, the intra-club match will be taken very seriously.

“It’s a crucial game for the players, our round one team will be selected on the players that perform best on Saturday and in our NAB Cup matches.”

Those attending the match will also be the first to meet the 2012 Leadership Group which will be announced in the Southern Plaza during the official guernsey presentation.

The Gold Coast SUNS treat the playing guernsey with the utmost reverence with the pre-season presentation significant occasion for the Club.

The players are presented with the jumper at the beginning of the season, symbolising that they recognise the commitment and responsibility associated with representing the Gold Coast SUNS on a national stage. Each player then hands their jumper back to head coach Guy McKenna and Chairman John Witheriff at the annual Club Champion awards night.

Both Coach Guy McKenna and Captain Gary Ablett will address fans during the presentation with the team also taking part in an autograph session.

Following the trial match the field will be open for a kick to kick session while Sunny Ray will also be on hand to showcase his amazing AFL skills.

The friendly Membership Services team will be on hand on the day and the SUNS Shop will be open until 2pm.

Entry is free and Gate 1 will open at 10am.

Come along and support the Gold Coast SUNS as we begin the 2012 season TOGETHER!
