The NEAFL SUNS have edged their way back into the top five with a 36 point win over Aspley played in slogging conditions in Brisbane.
A seven goal haul by Tom Lynch on his return from injury proved the difference, and ensured the SUNS made it consecutive victories for the first time since Round 5.
Coach Shaun Hart was pleased the SUNS played in conditions he had never encountered before.
"We played three pretty good quarters of footy and controlled the game," said Hart, with specific reference to a poor third quarter.
"When we got back to the game plan that we used so well in the first half after three-quarter time we once again hit the scoreboard and Tom Lynch continued to finish off his great work."
I have never seen conditions like it. I swear half the ground was mud and the other half wasn't too bad at all.
"It was quite bizarre."
Hart was full of praise for the efforts of Tom Lynch.
"He kicked seven goals and was the dominant player on the ground," he said.
"Particularly given the conditions, the ball was wet and heavy, like a piece of soap; he did a great job."
Another SUN to revel in the conditions was small forward Alik Magin.
"I thought Magin was just fantastic today," said Hart.
"His work all around the ground and his ball use was terrific.
"Hart also saved a special mention for his defender Jeremy Taylor and the oft maligned Josh Fraser.
"Jeremy Taylor was great down back, (in fact) I thought all our defenders were good," he said.
"Josh Fraser was outstanding in his role in the ruck and as a tall forward on a day that wasn't for talls."
Jacob Gillbee also showed some signs of returning to the form that saw him crowned NEAFL Player of the Year for the SUNS in 2011.
"He kicked three and did a really good job around the ground and played the small forward role really well."
Skipper Andrew McQualter and defender Taylor Hine were also named amongst the best players on the day.
In a sour note for the SUNS, midfielder Josh Toy was involved in what Hart described as a "one of the most sickening contests i have ever seen" with ex Lions player Robbie Copeland, with both players knocked out.
All roads head to Metricon Stadium on Saturday as the SUNS and Lions square off for the third time in the NEAFL with the ledger square at one all.Hart said it was going to be a big day for the club.
"We will be ready for a couple of big games."
