When Lachie Weller first requested a trade to the Gold Coast, playing in front of friends and family at Metricon Stadium was one of the driving factors in his decision to return home.
Seven months later and the 22-year-old will now get his first opportunity to pull on the red and gold in his new home ground for the Round 11 clash against Geelong.
“I have a lot of friends and family up for the game,” Weller told SUNS TV.
“I always dreamt of running out at Metricon in the Gold Coast jersey so it will be a really good moment for me in my career and also for my family as well.
“I was here in the first ever game at Metricon watching my brother play and that was against Geelong as well so I reckon it will be a sort of similar feel with a big crowd.”
Weller has adapted seamlessly again to life on the east coast and has thrived at half-back for the SUNS, playing every game and averaging over 20 disposals per match.
“I think at the start I was sort of getting used to playing with new teammates and things like that and they’re sort of getting used to playing with me as well,” Weller said.
“And also playing under a new coach, I think now we’re starting to settle down a little bit more and we’re starting to play some really good footy so it’s exciting.”
Back at training this week after the bye, Weller says the atmosphere around the club has everyone excited for the first game on the Gold Coast this year.
He expects a tough game against the Cats but is confident of getting the result with the support of a vocal home crowd at their backs.
“It almost feels like round one for us and we can really kickstart a big win at home and get the confidence up for the boys, so hopefully we can get it done.”
