Timmy Sumner has described his first taste of team success with the Gold Coast SUNS as the best moment in football, eclipsing the night he was drafted to the GC SUNS.

It’s been a whirlwind ride for the 18-year-old excitement machine, ineligible for the opening rounds of the season after he was hit with a four-week suspension carried over from an incident playing in the SANFL last year.

But after showing plenty of promise in his debut match against Geelong, in which he earned a nomination for the Round 10 Mark-of-the-Year, the exciting forward’s defensive efforts (six tackles) were celebrated amongst his teammates as they travelled down the player’s race after the final siren against the Kangaroos.

Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au after belting out the team song in the midst of his Powerade shower, an animated Sumner was thrilled to take part in the post-match celebrations.

“It was just an unbelievable feeling, knowing that you did your part for the team and everyone went well,” he said.

“To secure a win like that in just my second game was amazing… there was no better feeling in my career.”

The promising teenager admitted he still found himself star-struck when standing alongside the likes of Gary Ablett and Campbell Brown.

”It’s taken a while to get used to it through the NEAFL, but singing amongst all the senior boys like Gary (Ablett) was surreal,” Sumner said.

With goal-sneaks Harley Bennell and Jesse Lonergan both edging closer towards a return to the seniors, Sumner understands consistency will be key to holding down a spot in Guy McKenna’s best twenty-two.

“I’m pretty focused on maintaining my position because that takes a lot of hard work,” Sumner said.

“My defensive efforts tonight were pretty good, so hopefully that helps me get another crack next week.”

While Essendon have shown so far this season that their best is good enough to see them make a deep run into September, the Gold Coasters will be preparing adequately for the gigantic challenge they expect to face at Etihad Stadium this Saturday night.

“It’s going to be a very big test because they’re a very strong side, but after our efforts against the Roos on Saturday night, I think we will do pretty well.”
