The Gold Coast SUNS and the city’s NRL counterpart, the Gold Coast Titans, shared tackling and kicking techniques at Metricon Stadium this morning, as both teams embraced each other’s sporting cultures during a joint training session.
Senior Coach Guy McKenna and his coaching staff watched on as the Titans went through their paces, consulting with Titans Coach John Cartwright in between drills in a bid to improve and learn defensive skills.
Afterwards, many of the Titans backs and kickers stayed behind as David Swallow, Brandon Matera, Luke Russell and the rest of the Gold Coast’s sharpshooters helped the Rugby League boys hone their kicking game.
It didn’t take long before the practiced turned competitive between the two rival codes though, with both sides electing their best kicker in a bid to find out who is best in front of the big sticks, resulting in Half-Back Aidan Sezer and SUNS forward Tom Lynch taking turns with the Sherrin and Sheeden.
Admitting his shots at conversion is a work in progress, the 199cm key forward said it was insightful to see how the Titans go about doing things.
“We just came out and did a bit of goal-kicking along with the Titans and went through their routine and offered advice,” he said.
Looking ahead, the side’s final match is shaping up to be a classic showdown between the AFL’s newest kids on the block.
“It’s a good opportunity and we are really looking forward to putting on a good show and thank our fans who have stuck by us for the last three years,” Lynch said.
“We are confident we can bounce back from our loss to St. Kilda and build some confidence and momentum heading into the pre-season.”
