Assistant coach Matthew Primus believes the Gold Coast SUNS will recapture the form that made the side a stoppage force in its inaugural season.

“We’ve done a fair bit of stoppage work and we are looking forward to that being a real backbone of our footy club this year.”

The former Port Adelaide senior coach recalled the GC SUNS impressive work at stoppages in 2011.

"We only have to go back to Gold Coast’s first year in the competition. They (GC SUNS) were really good at stoppage work and clearance rate. So there is a lot of excitement amongst the group for them to get back to that."

Primus believes the GC SUNS competition for senior spots will ensure that the side will capitalize on the momentum created at the end of the 2012 season.

“There is a lot of competition for spots,"

“There is a lot of ruckman on the list and like it is at every footy club there are a lot of guys who want to play in the midfield.”

Primus said he had been impressed with Brandon Matera, Dion Prestia and Zac Smith on the training track.

“Dion (Prestia) and Fish (Brandon Matera) have been really good and Zac Smith has really gone well in the ruck... so those three have stood out personally.”

The former dual All Australian ruckman said Smith had plenty of opposition for the ruck spot.

"There is real competition with Dicko (Charlie Dixon) , and Dan Gorringe, Tom Nicholls and Rory (Thompson) have been doing a lot of work in there, so there are 4 or 5 guys there who are really striving to become the ruckman."
