Gold Coast Football Club will throw its support behind this year’s Mothers Day Classic Fun Run on Sunday, May 9 2010 by donating $10 of every $45 adult membership purchased on the day to breast cancer research.
The Mothers Day Classic, which attracts 90,000 participants nationwide, helps raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
With this year’s Gold Coast fun run expected to attract 4000 runners, Mothers Day Classic Organising Committee Member Robyn Cameron, said she was delighted by GCFC’s commitment.
“We’re overwhelmed by the club’s support in the lead up to the run,” she said.
According to Gold Coast Football Club Senior Coach Guy McKenna, GCFC is thrilled to be lending a hand.
“Most clubs support various groups in the community, and we’re no different. Whether the cause is breast cancer research or domestic violence or homelessness it’s all about improving quality of life.”
Thirteen GCFC staffers including McKenna will run in the event. Only just out of a protective moonboot after breaking his leg in a training mishap a few months back, McKenna remains coy about his prospects.
“I expect to be among the back markers,” he said. “I’m pretty sure it’ll probably be the first time my wife’ll get a win up.”
The Mothers Day Classic is one of several female-oriented initiatives in which GCFC is involved in May. On 18 May, GCFC will attend all girls Somerset College to encourage female participation in the game and at some stage in May the club will work with domestic violence service providers to help raise the profile of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on the Gold Coast.
