Gold Coast SUNS will not risk young midfield star David Swallow against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday unless he's close to 100 per cent fit.

Swallow hurt his knee in Sunday's loss against Melbourne and is racing the clock to be available for this weekend's wooden spoon battle at Metricon Stadium.

The SUNS will already have regulars Michael Rischitelli, Zac Smith, Karmichael Hunt, Dion Prestia, Sam Day and Luke Russell missing with injury.

They have 34 listed players to choose from against the Giants – most of who have fewer than 30 games experience.

Assistant coach Andy Lovell said despite this and the significance of the match, Swallow's long-term future would not be compromised.

"If he gets through training today and Friday we'd expect him to come up," Lovell said on Wednesday morning.

We need to make sure if he does play he's as close to 100 per cent fit as he can be because we certainly don't want to put him at risk long-term.

"You can't predict with impact injuries when they're going to come and in what shape and form they're going to come in.

"We're not going to put him out there and expose him to any adverse risk."

Swallow has been dogged by a knee injury for most of the season.

He hobbled around against Fremantle in round six, but still kicked three goals as a full-forward, and started against GWS the following week only to be subbed out in the first half.

The former No.1 NAB AFL Draft pick then missed seven matches before returning against Richmond in round 16.

Swallow is undoubtedly one of the SUNS toughest and most resilient players.

Lovell said the significance of playing GWS and trying to avoid the Suns' second wooden spoon in two years would have no influence on deciding whether he would play or not.

"Fear of failure against this mob doesn't drive us," he said.

We've got our own focuses long and short term and they're the things we'll stick strong to. We wouldn't put one of our most talented young players at risk to win one game of footy.

The likes of Kyal Horsley, Steven May and Aaron Hall are all expected to be among a host of forced inclusions.

"We'll still field a really strong, competitive team," Lovell said.

"Some of them are playing for their careers, no doubt, that's the nature of the business and the nature of the industry.

"It's an opportunity for us and we haven't had too many opportunities thus far to play in winnable games. We see it as an opportunity to win and that's the way we're approaching it."
