David Swallow
I'VE got to say I'm thrilled I made my comeback from injury last weekend.
Yes it was nice to cruise back in time for the SUNS' first win of the year over the Tigers in Cairns, but more importantly for me I'm glad to have a game under my belt before the QClash.
I've written on GoldCoastfc.com.au before how much I loved Western Derbies as a kid growing up in Perth and how much I want the QClash to evolve into something similar.
We have to be at our most desperate to beat the Lions and we'll really need a four quarter effort to get the job done and I'm thankful for having had at least one hit-out under my belt.
I didn't play games in the reserves during my rehabilitation so I'm still working on match fitness.
The approach we took was that I would take an extra two or three weeks trying to get that fitness back up on the track.
The conditioning staff were convinced my fitness base was good enough so rather than needing to build conditioning through playing games in the reserves, it was more about just hanging on to rebuild a little bit more strength.
They had confidence I would be able to come straight back into the seniors but I was blowing on the weekend no doubt, but it was good to be out there.
This was my first major injury and it was a real eye opener.
I learned how important it is to do everything right all the time.
Not just when you are injured but in your preparation too, the one percenters that give you every chance to get through a whole year because the game is so demanding.
I missed nine weeks in the end and I feel like half the season has gone.
I'm most disappointed about the playing exposure I've missed out on which counts a lot for me and the rest of the fellas that are only young and learning what it takes to be an AFL player.
It is a lonely place the injury list.
There was some tough days, especially in that period where the side got pumped a few times and I really wanted to be able to join the battle.
